Rear Admiral Leroy Collins, Jr. Veterans Museum

The Veterans Memorial Park Museum was commissioned June 6, 1990 and opened the next year in partnership with Hillsborough County Veterans Council (HCVC) and County officials that included hosting and organizing patriotic events at Veterans Memorial Park.   The Museum has served the community by accepting donations from families and others wanting to share military artifacts, weaponry, uniforms and miscellaneous items commonly used by our armed forces personal.  Two decades later, in order to show respect for one of our local veterans who served Florida in multiple ways for many years, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners named the Museum in honor of Rear Admiral LeRoy Collins Jr. on October 20, 2010.  Admiral Collins was killed in Tampa in a tragic accident on July 29, 2010.

Improvements to the property opened the door for veteran groups to host events at the park and as these activities became more frequent and popular it also became apparent that an organization was needed to help park rangers handle the details of these events.  So, local veteran advocates and county leaders decided to establish a non-profit organization to conduct patriotic ceremonies and to support other events at the park.  The organization became the Veteran’s Council of Hillsborough County made up of veteran groups from many local service organizations, such as, the American Legion, VFW, AMVETS, Vietnam Veterans of America, Purple Heart and others.  The organization became a non-profit and they continue to support Hillsborough County residents with professional patriotic ceremonies and other events throughout the year.
